Cardiac and pulmonary rehabilitation are medically supervised programs to help heart patients recover quickly and improve their overall physical, mental and social functioning. The goal is to stabilize, slow or even reverse the progression of cardiovascular disease or lung disease, thereby reducing the risk of heart disease, further lung problems, another cardiac event or death. Rehabilitation programs include:
- Counseling so the patient can understand and manage the disease process.
- Beginning an exercise program
- Counseling on nutrition.
- Helping the patient modify risk factors such as high blood pressure, smoking, high blood cholesterol, physical inactivity, obesity and diabetes.
- Providing vocational guidance to enable the patient to return to work
- Supplying information on physical limitations.
- Lending emotional support
- Counseling on appropriate use of prescribed medications.

Patients with known diagnosis including:
- Coronary Artery Disease
- Coronary Artery Bypass Graft (CABG)
- Cardiac Valvular Surgery
- Coronary Angioplasty / Stent
- Previous Heart Attack (within 1 year)
- Peripheral Vascular Disease with Intermittent Claudication
- Congestive Heart Failure
- COPD
- Heart or Lung Transplant
- Stable Angina
The program consists of 36 sessions and consists of individualized aerobic and anaerobic exercises. Also included are stretching, muscle toning, and weight training.
Patients’ electrocardiogram, blood pressure and oxygen saturation are monitored by trained staff during each session.
The program also includes educational sessions designed to help both patients and their families understand the disease process, risk factors, nutrition, medications, and stress management.
Enrollment requires an order from a primary care doctor or your cardiologist and must include an appropriate diagnosis.
